Bird Watching

If you are a birder, then you will want to get out those binoculars and get ready to listen and watch the over 200 different species of Wisconsin's breeding birds. To find where your bird of interest nests, you will want to consult the Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas (WBBA).

The 1000+ volunteers constructing the atlas have completed three years of fieldwork on mapping the breeding bird species of Wisconsin. Remarkable for its breadth and scope -- every corner of the state will be monitored during the project's five-year fieldwork phase. There is still two more years of field work and five more years of data processing, analysis, and the writing and publication of the atlas.

But for those who can't wait for 2005, interim results from the breeding bird surveys are available on the WBBA web site that includes a variety of maps on where the various breeding bird species. The maps display quads containing probable or confirmed breeding status of most Wisconsin breeding bird species. As data is continuing to be collected, maps are subject to change and will be updated regularly.
