One such trail is the Ice Age Trail which traces the features left by the last glacier that swept over Wisconsin more than 10,000 years ago. While all 1,200 miles of the trail are not yet complete, sections across the state are already open for use. The Wisconsin DNR offers an interactive map of the Ice Age Trail. Users can zoom in on any section and then choose to see the locations of parking areas, drinking water, toilets, phones, and other facilities. You can also view topographic maps of any area and see other trails that connect to the Ice Age Trail.
Northwest Wisconsin is blessed with having some of the best cross country skiing trails around. There are hundreds of miles of trails in this region rich in nordic skiing tradition and history. Visit the Northwest Wisconsin cross country skiing website for more information, including individual trail maps, accomodations, and calendar of events.
The University of Wisconsin Press has available on their website "Backpacking Wisconsin" (June 2000). This is the first ever book published solely for reference to hiking in Wisconsin. It was written by Jack P. Hailman and Elizabeth D. Hailman and is available for $19.95 plus tax.
Trail maps are plentiful at ski resorts, information centers, park headquarters, and chambers of commerce wherever you go. The Wisconsin Department of Tourism has a web page with all cross country skiing locations in the state and a map indicating all state parks, forests, and trails.
