The two most common sources in finding roads maps are government agencies (such as the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Wisconsin Department of Tourism, and USGS) and commercial providers that supply atlases in both printed and computerized map forms.

The
latest edition of this map is 2000/2001. The emphasis of the State Highway Map
is the coverage of principal truck and auto routes (interstate, U.S., and
certain state highways) in Wisconsin and the adjacent parts of neighboring
states. The lower order routes (the remaining state and some of the county
highways) are mapped but not all are named. Each of the major urban areas in
the state is shown on an inset map which shows principal and local routes in
much greater detail. Recreational areas and points of interest are mapped and
explained in the map's legend. The map's mileage diagram gives the direct-route
distance between major cities in Wisconsin. Distances are also given between
Chicago, IL and St.Paul, MN. En route distances along major roads are shown on
the map.
There are two
ways to obtain Wisconsin County Maps. First, you can go to the DOT's Maps and
Publications Sales Office's webpage and download the order form. Prices for both the 8.5" x 11" and 18" x 24"
sheet maps are listed above. The second way to obtain these maps is to go to download them
from the DOT website and download the versions. These maps are 8.5" x 11" (or
larger) and black and white, depicting a single county at a scale of 1:100,000.
They were not created as a foldable roadmap.
The DOT also publishes a three-sheet map of the city of Madison
with a scale of 1"=2 miles.
The Wisconsin Information Center, located at 201 W. Washington
Avenue in Madison, has a variety of free brochures available. Call
1-800-472-8747 for more information. For free travel guides that include maps
and text, visit the Department
of Tourism website (some are available in PDF form) or call 1-800-432-TRIP.
The 7.5-minutes USGS
quadrangle series maps can also be useful as a reference for the road network.
These maps are published at the 1:24,000-scale and show topographic features.
See topographic maps for more details.
Within the Map Section of the
SCO's website there is a page dedicated in providing information about travel atlases for Wisconsin. Listed are commercial
providers with both digital and printed maps available. This is a great first
step in finding out what Wisconsin has to offer.
