Local snowmobile clubs, chambers of commerce, tourism centers, or local governments may produce detailed maps of trails within local areas. The Snowmobile Trail Map includes listings of Community Tourist Centers (with telephone numbers) as well as state, federal, and county trail system contacts.
Wisconsin has a program administered by the Department of Natural Resources and cooperating counties, and funded from snowmobile license fees and gas taxes, to mark and maintain thousands of miles of trails. Much of the field work done under the program is handled by local snowmobile clubs.
In the past decade, All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) have become a very popular part of outdoor recreation. With thousands of miles of "snow highways" developed for snowmobiling, counties throughout the state are quickly transforming their winter snowmobile trails into summer ATV trails. There are over 900 miles of trails and intensive use areas available for all-terrain vehicle riding.
This Wisconsin Department of Tourism also produces the Wisconsin ATV Guide, a link to Wisconsin's top trails and tours. Each map includes trail mileage, parking areas, contacts for local information, and an extensive narrative describing on and off-route attractions. Visit their Maps and Guides section for more information.
The DNR offers an "Activities" page to their website that provides licensing information for hunting and fishing. There is also information for other recreational activities such as skiing, biking, and boating.
