Telephone, electric, and natural gas utilities all have maps that represent their service areas and distribution routes. Typically, these maps are small scale showing generalized features, but large-scale maps are produced with details of local systems. Because these large scale maps show the delivery of utility service to individual buildings they are usually not available to the general public.
Gas and electric maps are available from the Wisconsin Utilities Association (WIUA) and the Public Service Commission (PSC).
Gas utilities and pipelines in Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Penninsula are represented in the gas map published by the ANR Pipeline company in 1991. This map, with a 1" = 20 miles scale, measures 14" x 20" and it includes county and civil township boundaries and also public land survey township and range lines.
The map of electric utilities shows service areas of the major utility companies, municipally owned utilities and the local utility co-ops in Wisconsin. This map was published in 1993 by the WI Utilities Association and the PSC, at a scale of 1" = 13 miles, and includes civil township and county boundaries.
The WI Utilities Association (WIUA) offers both the gas and electric service maps, while the PSC offers the gas map, electric service map, and the map of electric transmission lines.
Contact the Wisconsin State Telephone Association (WSTA) to order the telephone exchange service area map of Wisconsin. This map shows the telephone exchange service area boundaries, along with the corresponding company names. Companies that have multiple exchanges are shown in color, while companies with single exchanges are in white.
A more general map showing the areas covered by Wisconsin's five telephone area codes is available on the web. Regional maps showing area code coverage are also available on-line.
