Background Information, Setup Tutorials and Software

Principal Contact:
NSDI Clearinghouse related questions: Doug Nebert
Status: Available
Metadata Storage Structure: Discrete (SGML and HTML)
Brief Description:
The Isite package consists primarily of an indexing engine and a Z39.50 server application. The indexer is used to create a searchable metadata index when an FGDC field mapping file is applied to CSDGM metadata in SGML form. When the server component and index are registered with the FGDC and provide field searchable Internet access to these indexed metadata, the server site is considered to be an 'NSDI node.'
Cost: none
Notable Plus: Provides stable, low maintenance access to metadata stores
Notable Minus:
Storing metadata in a complex directory structure limits the number of metadata documents that can be indexed.
Metadata Exchange: Not applicable
Useability:
Administrative:
The step-by-step tutorial material will allow most potential Clearinghouse operators to setup an Isite based metadata server in a few hours. Following registration of the new Clearinghouse with FGDC, it will be searchable through any one of several gateways. When metadata is updated and re-indexed, the server must be stopped and restarted to implement the new metadata index. Be sure to insert a BASE tag into the HEAD element of the HTML metadata (mp will do this) to insure that relative URLs in metadata will function when the metadata is revealed in a search through a gateway.
Tool Reliability:
Sample of Interface: Command line
