Job Summary:

Engineering Technicians I or II perform entry level technical duties in one or more of the following areas:  construction, transportation, environmental, traffic and water engineering.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Operate survey instruments to obtain angles, elevations, distances, points, and other survey information.
  • Take survey notes by hand regarding a benchmark circuit, measurements for water or sewer, or preliminary measurements for a project.
  • Make engineering-related mathematical computations involving algebra and geometry.
  • Make precise measurements of completed construction work using an engineer’s tape.
  • Perform manual and automated drafting work and prepare field sketches.
  • Assist in preparing designs and construction plans using Microstation including charts, maps, graphs and drawings.
  • Collect, analyze and record data for preparing designs and plans.
  • Utilizing computer software such as Excel, compile certificate work used for payments to contractors.
  • Assist in setting transit lines, gathering data for cross section levels, and establishing grades.
  • Run surveys relative to the following project types: grade separations, structures, major arterials, properties, street and alley openings, streets, sewers, water mains, tunnels, dredging, street repairs, obstructions, land descriptions, plats of surveys, subdivisions, and drainage related issues.
  • Assist in transferring electronically collected data to CAD software to produce preliminary plans for design, sewer and water survey reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

Engineering Technician I and II:

  • Successful completion of one year of high school algebra AND one year of high school geometry OR the equivalent of each in a high school that utilizes block scheduling.
  • Six months of full-time experience performing surveying.
  • Six months of full-time experience using Microstation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Engineering Technician II:

5.  Two years of full-time experience performing field surveying.

 

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering Technology.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of surveying practices and equipment.
  • Skill in using AutoCAD and/or Microstation to produce technical drawings.
  • Ability to conduct field observations, document field descriptions of work and transfer data into an electronic format for use in the production of design plan and survey report.
  • Ability to calculate and understand mathematics, applying algebraic and geometric concepts for use in the preparation of design plans and survey reports.
  • Ability to use a computer to enter data, upload information from equipment and create documents using Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to complete accurate work assignments in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Oral communication skills to communicate effectively with co-workers, management and the public.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with culturally diverse individuals at all levels inside and outside the organization.
  • Ability to use office equipment such as a computer, printer, copier, scanner, fax and phone.
