Job Summary:
The spatial technology specialist is a GIS expert and consultant who collaborates with researchers and faculty to identify, develop, and deliver appropriate technology solutions in spatial research at the University. U-Spatial, a unit within Research Computing, provides support for spatial research, helps eliminate duplication and fragmentation of scientific resources, and provides a framework of data, equipment, expertise, and resources that benefits all researchers.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The primary focus of the spatial technology specialist will be to design, manage, and facilitate training activities. These activities include workshops, trainings, and outreach events for faculty, students, staff, and affiliated researchers. The spatial technology specialist will be responsible for establishing goals, objectives, and priorities related to these activities, as well as identifying appropriate tools and resources. The position will develop and deliver curriculum for a variety of learning formats including, but not limited to, short videos, on-line modules, web-based training, instructor-led workshops, drop-by lab sessions, and multi-day training camps.
The spatial technology specialist will consult with colleagues throughout the University needing assistance with GIS, remote sensing, and spatial computing. U-Spatial regularly works with departments across the entire University on all campuses. Consultations range from quick help via email to being part of a research team on a sponsored project. In addition, the spatial technology specialist will help manage the U-Spatial data infrastructure. This can include specialized data resources (i.e. DigitalGlobe Basemap), ArcGIS Online subscription, and Esri ArcGIS Server infrastructure.
This position is key in our effort to build and foster communities of practice using spatial technologies to enhance research, teaching, and outreach. The position will cultivate partnerships with other experts in GIS and spatial technologies and will be expected to stay abreast of emerging technologies.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Master’s degree in geography, GIS, remote sensing, computer science, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated proficiency in the Esri ArcGIS software packages
- Experience designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating academic curriculum or training and development programs
- Experience instructing adult learners
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated skill in communicating technical material to technical and non-technical audiences, such as in conference presentations and report-writing
Preferred:
- Broad background in GIS, remote sensing, cartography, or spatial computing
- Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population having a wide range of technical experience levels
- Experience managing Esri ArcGIS Enterprise infrastructure
- Experience administering an ArcGIS Online subscription
- Familiarity with web programming languages (i.e. JavaScript, HTML, CSS, etc.)
- Familiarity with scripting languages (i.e. Python, R, etc.)
