Job Summary:
Hennepin County’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team is seeking a motivated intern who has intermediate GIS experience, is willing to contribute ideas and learn from others, and is able to successfully collaborate with colleagues to meet the county’s GIS needs. This GIS intern will work approximately 10-20 hours per week from January 2018 through April 2018, with the possibility of the internship being extended.
The intern’s primary responsibility will be performing GIS technical tasks related to updating, creating, and maintaining enterprise geodatabase layers, and will have the opportunity to work directly with experienced GIS professionals on a variety of data related projects and initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Perform data editing tasks within enterprise and file geodatabases.
- Maintain currency and completeness of enterprise data and ArcGIS Online content.
- Assist with completing metadata and documentation.
- Perform spatial analysis and map creation as needed.
- Participate on collaborative project teams.
- Perform technical support as needed.
Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in a post-secondary level Geography or GIS program or a closely related field.
- Understanding of basic GIS and spatial analysis principles.
- Experience editing GIS data using ESRI ArcGIS Desktop Software (10.x)
- Experience performing georectification of aerial imagery using ArcGIS Desktop tools.
- Experience with ArcGIS Online and associated applications.
- Knowledge of spatial database design principles and geodatabases.
- Knowledge of cartographic principles.
- Basic knowledge of Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS), structured query language (SQL), and Microsoft SQL Server.
- Ability to:
- Present information and respond to questions from managers, staff, outside agencies, and the general public.
- Complete documentation procedures.
- Work under limited supervision.
- Work in a team environment and communicate effectively with colleagues.
