The primary function of the GIS Technician is to be the technical resource to update the cadastral and tax maps from all 19 municipalities within Milwaukee County. The technician will assist the GIS analyst in the Register of Deeds to input, verify and correct the property changes from the recorded documents. The technician will also be responsible for the maintenance of the Milwaukee County enterprise addressing system and the updates to the planimetric and topographic dataset for the Land Information Office. These core datasets are maintained per mandate for the County Land Information Office between the County and local governments, as described in Wis. Statute 59.72(3)(a).

Job Duties:

  • Input, edit, correct, and verify the tax and cadastral mapping information from the recorded documents in the Register of Deeds. Use Coordinate Geometry, COGO, techniques to input and correct the tax boundaries from the deed descriptions. The Technician will work closely with the Register of Deeds to validate the tax maps;
  • Responsible for updates to the Countywide address system. Edit, correct and verify the relationship of County addresses to property and roadway information. Updates, corrects, validates and verifies the topographic and planimetric datasets. Employs spatially enabled toolsets, reconciles multiple and diverse source materials;
  • Respond and fulfill GIS data requests. Data requests can be for specific areas of interest or complete datasets. These can also be custom requests that need manipulation or transformation;
  • Creates reports and develops presentations for GIS projects, demonstrations and exhibitions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, GIS or Computer Science;
  • One (1) year of experience in Enterprise GIS;
  • Knowledge of Esri desktop, Esri ArcGIS online is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets;
  • Knowledge in Coordinate Geometry, COGO, input/read and map from recorded deeds;
  • Ability to maintain a continuing working relationship that can have a significant effect on the success of the organization;
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, reports, short correspondence and memos;
  • Ability to speak effectively before both internal and/or external groups;
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals, scientific/technical journals and procedures, government regulations, financial and legal documents;
  • Ability to make decisions of responsibility involving evaluation of information; decisions may require development or application of alternatives or precedents;
  • Ability to execute decisions within limits of standard policy and procedures.
