Job Summary:

 

This internship for a college student is an opportunity for a budding data scientist to perform complex analysis on relatively large datasets in support of region’s largest water utility. Working under the direction of the GIS/Mapping Coordinator, the intern will be responsible for performing high-level statistical analysis, data mining, and database maintenance to support Madison Water Utility’s mapping group and asset management program. The intern will primarily be concerned with questions of asset condition, remaining asset life, projected costs of repair and replacement of assets, and–potentially–questions regarding present and projected customer water usage. Furthermore, the intern will be responsible for assisting the GIS/Mapping Coordinator and Asset Manager in business process modeling, reporting, and data warehouse development. It is expected that the intern will bring his or her full range of knowledge and skills to the position.

Duties:

Data Analysis

  • Assist in developing, documenting, and updating the condition assessments for buried and non-buried infrastructure.
  • Assist in the creation of a field-based condition assessment program to assure proper data collection.
  • Assist in designing and implementing research-based condition assessment and data evaluation programs (data mining of historical records, GIS, etc.)
  • Assist in developing a buried asset rating program that will simply communicate buried asset condition and reinvestment need to other City Departments, officials, boards, and neighborhood organizations
  • Assist in maintaining and updating present databases and improving extract, transmit, load (ETL) procedures for Utility datasets.
  • Assist in performing data pulls from customer service database and from SCADA databases.

 Software and Data Management

  • Assist in the implementation of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Assist in the creation of a procedure to collect data from the Utility’s CMMS to inform maintenance and condition assessment activities.
  • Analyze asset management data storage and reporting requirements, evaluate options for improved efficiency of data management, and recommend/implement improvements.
  • Review current trends and developments in asset management software and data management and recommend improvements or enhancements as feasible.
  • Perform related work as required.

Qualifications:

Applicants shall be currently enrolled, and a student in good standing, in an accredited 4-year program leading to a bachelor or master degree in computer science, mathematics and statistics, engineering, business information systems, Geographic Information Systems or other closely related field and have attained a status of Junior or higher. May/August 2018 graduates will be considered as long as the candidate intends to continue his/her education following completion of the internship.

Applicants should possess the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in, understanding of, or willingness to learn about data science, water utility operations, asset management, and large-scale data processing.
  • Advanced statistical knowledge
  • Familiarity with computer programming
  • Familiarity with Excel, Access, Python, R, SQL
  • Familiarity with concepts of ETL, data warehousing, and OLAP
