Job Summary:

Land ownership and location are a part of nearly everything we do.  Anoka County Senior Survey Crew Technicians play an important role by staying up-to-date on rapidly changing technologies in the field and using this knowledge to best serve customers.

Utilize your problem solving and analytical skills as part of a team of professionals who support county departments, cities, businesses and the general public by measuring and mapping boundaries that define land ownership.  Every question we answer, resource we recommend, and citizen we support is driven by our commitment to helping individuals understand their geographical environment.

Duties:

  • Assisting with operating and recording measurement data using total stations, data collectors, Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and automatic levels
  • Assisting with the maintenance of survey instruments to ensure accuracy and extended life of the equipment
  • Performing the duties of the Crew Chief during their absence
  • Downloading and processing field data from GPS receivers or total station and data collector using a computer with surveying software
  • Assisting with the research and compilation of data necessary to complete field surveying tasks assigned to the survey crew
  • Assisting with the maintenance of the Public Land Survey corners
  • Reading and interpreting legal descriptions
  • Performing computer-aided-drafting duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.: post-secondary education in computer-aided drafting, advanced mathematics and land surveying preferred
  • Minimum one year experience in surveying, including operation of total stations and data collectors, GPS receivers, levels, survey data processing software, computer-aided drafting and coordinate geometry software experience
  • A combination of post-secondary education and experience equal to three years’ experience in surveying, including operation of total stations and data collectors, GPS receivers, levels, survey data processing software, computer-aided drafting and coordinate geometry software experience
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Land surveying techniques and procedures
  • Operating procedures for total stations, data collectors, GPS receivers and levels
  • Computer-aided drafting (AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred) and survey data processing software
  • State statutes pertaining to surveying procedures
  • Advanced mathematics, including trigonometry, algebra and coordinate geometry.

Skill in:

  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Problem-solving and analyzing data
  • Attention to detail

Ability to:

  • Work as part of a team to provide surveying services to internal and external clients
  • Take direction from the Crew Chief and maintain a positive working relationship with co-workers
  • Perform consistent, high quality work with great attention to detail
  • Communicate with the general public and outside contacts
  • Read and accurately interpret legal descriptions
  • Efficiently operate total stations, data collectors, automatic levels and Global Positioning System receivers
  • Operate surveying software used to download and process field data stored in a total station and data collector
  • Perform duties on uneven surfaces and in all weather conditions
  • Draft maps, charts and plats using computer-aided drafting software (AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred)
  • Use and/or learn ESRI GIS software
