Job Summary:
The American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) at the UW-Milwaukee Libraries seeks a qualified student intern to assist with GIS and spatial data metadata authoring. The intern will join a team of student interns working on digital projects and will work under the supervision of the Geospatial Information Specialist. MLIS/MLS students with an interest in metadata for digital resources are especially encouraged to apply. Knowledge of GIS, spatial data and relevant skills can be learned on the job. This is a paid position.
Duties:
- Assisting with authoring metadata for geospatial data resources at the AGSL
- Learning about common GIS data formats and GIS data collection, curation, distribution, and discovery
- Development of effective workflows for metadata authoring
- Assisting in the development of spatial data repository services including user-facing resources, metadata workflows, data ingestion, and data preservation
- Learning and adherence to various metadata standards including the ISO 19100 suite of geospatial metadata standards, Dublin Core, and GeoBlacklight discovery metadata and use of controlled vocabularies including Library of Congress Subject Headings, ISO 19115 Topic Categories, among others
- Other general library duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Required
- Ability to perform routine tasks in Windows 10, Office365, and Microsoft Office
- Ability to complete detailed work with a high degree of consistency and accuracy
- Ability to solve problems independently as well as collaboratively
- Ability and interest in learning to use unfamiliar tools and software
- Position subject to UWM Libraries criminal background check
- Enrolled as a student at an institution of higher education and able to work in person at the UWM Libraries in Milwaukee, WI.
- Respectfully and effectively work with our diverse community of patrons, staff, and stakeholders without prejudice or discrimination and adherence to relevant policy
Desired
- Graduate student studying information science and/or geographic information science or an advanced undergraduate with relevant experience
- Knowledge of any of the following: Python, Ruby, XML/XSLT, Dublin Core, MARC, MODS, shell scripting, SQL scripting
- Knowledge of library resource description
- Ability to perform routine desktop GIS tasks
- Experience searching for and using geospatial data
- Proficiency in language(s) other than English
