As a Technical Data Steward, you will provide data management and technical assistance to the Department of Natural Resource’s Division of Fish and Wildlife, Section of Wildlife. This position is responsible for generating, updating, documenting and publishing the datasets defined within the Data Domain and assists customers with the proper use, mapping and analysis of information regarding facilities, land cover/habitat, and public lands managed by the Section of Wildlife.

This position is temporary and includes full state fringe benefits; position is anticipated to last up to three (3) years.**

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must clearly demonstrate all of the following qualifications in their resume.
  • Position requires a minimum of two (2) years of experience in GIS support and product development.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related substitutes for two years of experience, OR related Associate’s substitutes for one year.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Information Systems, Wildlife Management, Biology, Forestry, Ecology, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Working knowledge of one or more programming languages (e.g., Python)
  • Knowledge of database systems
  • Ability to perform vector and raster GIS data analysis using spatial overlay, map algebra, and data relation tools.
  • Ability to organize and document large data sets.
  • Knowledge of cartographic design technologies.
  • Ability to organize, standardize, edit and maintain spatial datasets for accuracy, currency and security
  • Ability to author clear metadata for spatial datasets following State of Minnesota spatial metadata guidelines
  • Ability to join/link relational databases, model and analyze spatial data, and produce accurate and professional data products (e.g., data summaries, reports, graphs, maps) to meet business needs
  • A strong conceptual background of geospatial analysis techniques
  • ArcGIS for Server, ArcGIS Online, or ArcGIS portal platforms
  • Four years of experience using ESRI desktop suite of software tools and extensions
  • Digital cartographic production
  • GPS technology use for natural resource applications
  • Knowledge of natural, cultural and recreation resource management
  • Deliver GIS trouble-shooting, technical assistance and training to clients with different abilities
  • Proficiency with desktop productivity tools such as MS Word and PowerPoint
  • Effective communication with a variety of stakeholders
