About the Job:

The MGS is seeking a highly motivated individual to bring their unique experience and perspective to our community. This full-time position supports geologists and other staff by providing geographic information system (GIS) based 3D geologic modelling and visualization services. The employee provides interim GIS products to the geologists and then uses existing procedures and scripts to create GIS products from their work. This requires knowledge of geologic history and processes and the geographic information systems, as well as problem solving and creative thinking skills to create digital geologic maps and other products. Some training in these skills will be provided.

Essential Functions:

  • Geographic Information Services and Map creation (80%)
    • Create GIS projects with appropriate datasets so that geologists can make interpretations and draw map contacts or contour geologic surfaces
    • Take geologists’ work and create maps, cross-sections, surfaces, and other products that meet cartographic and editorial standards
    •  Assist geologists with software and GIS-related problems
    • Provide geological feedback to geologists within the context of mapping and the GIS environment
    • Develop GIS scripts and tools for more efficient preparation and creation of standardized products
    •  Participate in development of new products and procedures
  • Distribution of MGS digital products (20%)
    • Create digital and map interfaces for distributing MGS products and manage product files
    •  Keep data, and database of available products, up-to-date

Non- Essential Functions:

  • Attendance at GIS- and mapping-related meetings
  •  Maintain currency with GIS products and usage
  • Interaction with users and local, state, or national organizations that use or require digital data
  • Public outreach involving geology and GIS, including teachers at all grade levels

Minimum/Essential Qualifications:

  •  BS/BA and 1 year of related experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience to equal five (5) years.
  •  Must have a degree, training, or extensive experience in geographic information systems, specifically the ESRI family of ArcGIS products (Desktop, Pro, Online).
  • Must understand geology and geologic mapping as demonstrated by experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geologic Engineering, geography, or related field.
  • Must be comfortable working in a team, working on several projects simultaneously, and meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential.

Preferred Qualifications: (the applicant does not need to meet these qualifications):

  •  Master’s degree or higher in Geographic Information Science, Geology, or Geologic Engineering is preferred.
  • A certificate in Geographic Information Science is useful.
  •  Experience in relational databases such as PostgreSQL, developing both spatial and tabular data tools using Python, along with browser-based and/or mobile app development using tools such as ArcGIS online, Flask, Plotly or Angular. Familiarity with vector-based graphics software (e.g. Adobe Illustrator).
  • Experience in 3D geologic modelling and visualization.
