Job Summary:
The primary function of the GIS Intern is to assist LIO staff with general maintenance of GIS data. Geographic Information System (GIS) Intern – Assist the Sr. GIS Analyst with current DOT GIS related projects by collecting/updating assets in the field, updating spatial databases with definitive resources, and documenting current GIS practices to develop and maintain MCDOT’s enterprise GIS.
Job Duties:
- Maintaining Data. Is responsible for maintaining digital geographic data within the Milwaukee County Enterprise Geographic Information System (EGIS). Duties include source map preparation and editing; digitizing; feature coding; data conversion; post conversion editing and labeling; map and report generation; data documentation (metadata preparation); and data maintenance operations.
- Collecting and Verifying Roadside Assets. Is responsible for collecting and verifying digital geographic data along highways and freeways within Milwaukee County using mobile GPS collection techniques and ortho photo interpretation.
- GIS Applications. Is responsible for operating GIS software to display geographic data; to design, create, and plot custom map products; to generate summary reports; and to support standard analytical functions.
- GIS Support. Provide assistance in support of data import and export services.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A current resident of the State of Wisconsin.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must be working towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree on Geography, GIS, or Computer Science.
- Six (6) months of coursework experience in GIS, Cartography, or Computer Science
- Intermediate Knowledge of all related computer and software applications such as word processing and spreadsheets.
- Intermediate Knowledge Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Additional Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of all related computer and software applications such as word processing and spreadsheets.
- Knowledge of esri desktop and esri ArcGIS online.
- Ability to exchange basic information with internal and /or external contacts.
- Ability Maintain sensitive or confidential information.
- Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, reports, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to speak effectively before both internal and/or external groups.
- Read, analyze, and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals, scientific/technical journals and procedures, government regulations, financial and legal documents.
- Makes minimal decision-making responsibility.
- Understand and follow instructions.
- Execute decisions within limits of standard policy and procedures.
