Under the general direction of the GIS Administrator, the GIS Technician creates and maintains a variety of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases, documentation, and map layers, inputs geographic data from a variety of sources, and produces high quality outputs as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Maintains a variety of GIS layers and databases including street, fire, park, building, and boundary data while adhering to organizational quality standards. (40%)

• Creates maps and special projects for various internal customers and fulfills data request for both internal and external customers according to organizational standards. (30%)

• Interprets and transfers data from source documents including digital and/or printed plats, record drawings, plans, profiles, and legal descriptions. (20%)

• Collects field data with GPS (Global Positioning Systems) and provide support to field staff for any mobile technology. (10%)

• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Geography, Surveying, Planning, or other directly related area.
• Minimum of one (1) year of related experience in GIS applications and technology.
• Minimum of one (1) year of practical application of Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) enterprise software.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Thorough knowledge of office terminology and GIS practices and procedures.
• Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows environment and networking, ESRI GIS software, Microsoft Office, Python and mobile devices, and other relevant computer information systems.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical data and information, and the ability to effectively relay the same information to management, users, and the public.
• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as statistical inference, fundamentals of plane and solid geometry, and the application of algebraic and trigonometric functions.
• Ability to apply concepts, such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions, to practical situations.
• Ability to classify, compute, tabulate, and categorize data.
• Ability to utilize a variety of advisory and design data and information, such as land records, maps, statistical data, utility plans, engineering plan/profile sheets, and computer documentation.
