Under the general supervision of the GIS Coordinator, the Geographic Information System (“GIS”) Analyst is responsible for performing various duties related to the development and maintenance of the City’s GIS, including database development, quality control, and output. In addition, the position will support miscellaneous departmental, and city needs, including assisting project research in areas both within the Engineering Division, as well as other divisions within the Department of Public Works.
Responsibilities
Essential Responsibilities:
- Consults with users and assists GIS Project Specialist and other Department staff in conducting information assessments to define user needs and systems requirements.
- Develops point, line and polygon features the use of digitization and coordinate geometry under ArcGIS software.
- Handles internal service requests by retrieving and providing GIS layers, reports, and maps under supervision.
- Designs and updates cartographic templates and standardized maps for recurring departmental needs.
- Performs data entry and routine updates to spatial and tabular GIS databases to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
- Supports quality assurance and quality control processes by reviewing GIS layers and correcting geometry, topology, and attribute errors.
- Participates in testing GIS applications or system updates by documenting results and reporting bugs or errors to senior staff.
- Assists in the evaluation, troubleshooting and managing of the GIS and GPS system software and hardware.
- Stays current with trends and developments in GIS in order to remain current with changes and growth of GIS, both within the city operations and market trends.
- Develops and supports online reporting tools and dashboard technologies.
- Prepares written documentation to communicate processes and procedures, including technical documentation explaining geoprocessing scripts.
General Responsibilities:
- Assists in troubleshooting and user support.
- Researches problems and makes recommendations for changes; assists in the implementation of new systems.
- Trains and educates staff and general public on new systems.
- Provides backup for senior GIS staff as needed.
- Keeps immediate supervisor and others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems or suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Geographic Information Systems, geography, or related field required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in GIS analysis and system management required.
- Possession and maintenance of valid driver’s license and auto insurance in accordance with state of Wisconsin law required. Personal vehicle for use on the job required.
Qualifications & Skills
- Extensive knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) and cartographic principles and techniques.
- Extensive working knowledge of GIS methods and procedures for input, processing output, and development of applications.
