The GIS Technician will assist the GIS Unit staff in a fast-paced and engaging learning experience supporting advanced GIS workflows and technical implementations. The GIS Unit supports the enterprise GIS deployments and staff throughout the Department and is in the Bureau of Information Technology Services, Division of Business Management, headquartered at the Madison, Hill Farms State Office Building. The candidate will gain valuable experience learning key aspects of our everyday operations by shadowing staff during GIS software troubleshooting, working independently to curate and catalog imagery, and provide independent testing in platforms such as ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise. You’ll gain insight in deploying GIS software, services, and data from beginning to final product.
The GIS Technician will work collaboratively as part of a team of IT professionals to support GIS operations for the Bureau of Information Technology Services (BITS) GIS Unit. This position will work under the guidance of other GIS Unit staff and under the close progressing to limited supervision of the GIS Unit Supervisor. The position will be given ample training and direction for independent tasks and opportunities to experience GIS implementations side by side with professional GIS staff. The position requires knowledge and experience in IT/GIS and understanding of GIS software, services, and data with a desire to help staff make efficient use of GIS technology.
The primary customer base for this position will include all major divisions within the Department of Transportation.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES include following all Department safety guidelines and standards in order to maintain safe working conditions; reporting to supervisor all incidents, accidents and near misses that resulted or could have resulted in personal injury or personal injury of a co-worker; wearing appropriate personal protective equipment in designated areas; offering safety and health suggestions to co-workers to reduce risk; and attending appropriate safety training sessions as directed.

65% Goal A: Create, Update, and Monitor Content, Data, and Services
A1. Catalog aerial imagery in cloud stores and create mosaic datasets for deployment in basemaps and web services
A2. Review and update GIS metadata for compliance ensuring they meet Department standards
A3. Review and document applications to ensure compliance with Department standards
A4. Provide routine administration in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise using dedicated Admin Tools and ArcGIS Monitoring software
35% Goal B: General Technical Support
B1. Triage technical issues by independently researching and documenting issues related to GIS software
B2. Coordinate, track, and organize application testers
B3. Maintain documentation, plans, issue tracking and resolution systems
B4. Research, test, and recommend GIS tools in new software versions
Requested Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Geographic Information Systems (GIS) related education (e.g. coursework, training, etc.) and/or work experience
• Experience working with GIS data either in local geodatabase or a broader enterprise geodatabase management system
• Experience in either of Esri’s web-based platforms ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise
• Experience designing or creating maps in ArcGIS Pro
• Knowledge of basemaps including cached, vector, or dynamic services for use in GIS based applications
