The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) internship will support the gathering, development, editing, and maintenance of GIS records and other land services. The position will reside in the Land Information office, which is responsible for the GIS, Planning, Real Property Listing, and Surveyor functions of the county.

Duration of internship: 40 hours per week for 12-week period (480 hours total)
Work schedule:  Monday through Friday – 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Preferred Start Date: June 1, 2026

Housing/Lodging: Polk County does not offer internship housing. It is the responsibility of the selected candidates to secure housing within a reasonable distance during the internship period.

Duties and Responsiblities

Applicants can expect to gain real-world work experience in GIS and more, including the following:

  • Collect, capture, input, and edit geospatial data within the county GIS ensuring data quality
  • GPS field collection
  • Modernize land records in the County
  • Creates thematic maps
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Coursework or practical experience using ArcGIS Pro
  • Understanding of spatial data editing and map production
  • Current enrollment in or completion of a degree in, GIS, Geography, Planning, Environmental Science, or related field.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with GPS technology
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products

  • Strong work ethic and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Good driving record
