About the Ice Age Trail Alliance: The Ice Age Trail Alliance was founded in 1958 with the mission of caring for the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, one of only 11 such trails in the country. As part of its mission, the Alliance protects and manages land for the Trail. At the Alliance there is a culture that supports and inspires conservation achievements and personal development.

Position Summary: The GIS Intern is a limited-term position that assists the GIS Coordinator with updating and creating maps and web-based GIS applications supporting the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Working closely with Alliance staff and volunteers, this role plays a key part in improving mapping accuracy, usability, and trail-related digital content.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Working with Alliance staff and volunteers, successful applicant will primarily assist the GIS Coordinator with updating and creating You-Are-Here maps for sections of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Additional duties may include updating Alliance StoryMaps and improving Ice Age Trail content in the FarOut mobile app.

Location and Travel: Position is based at the Alliance’s headquarters in the Village of Cross Plains.

Start date: May/June 2026
End date: August 2026 (Start and end dates are flexible)

Hours: 20 hours per week for 12 weeks, preferably including Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

Compensation: $15/hour

Successful applicant must:

  •  Have GIS experience or be in a GIS-related field of study
  • Have general knowledge of ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS StoryMaps, ArcGIS Online, map creation, and data editing
  • Be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Be self-directed and able to work alone with minimal supervision
  • Have solid interpersonal skills including the ability to maintain good working relationships with coworkers and volunteers
  • Ability to effectively relate to a diverse range of people
  • Be 18 years or older by date of application
