The Cartography Laboratory is a teaching, research and outreach facility that provides training for cartography students, performs cutting-edge research on map design (moving more and more to computer-based map products), and provides cartographic services to the faculty and staff of the university and to the broader public.The Assistant Director will manage the Lab’s day-to-day activities. Set staffing levels and oversee operations. Make decisions relating to purchases, space, policies and procedures, short- and long-range planning, etc. The Assistant Director will also:(10%) Contribute expertise and experience to the overall design and production of online and paper map products. Provide technical assistance to faculty and staff of the Department of Geography and the wider campus community.(15%) Assist/initiate client contact. Manage client relations with respect to customer needs, expectations, and project status. Resolve problems. Write/assist in writing cost proposals. Provide costing advice and consultation related to cost proposals. Track and improve accuracy of cost proposals.(15%) Manage the Lab’s financial affairs. Track all revenue and expenses, respond to audits, forecast future budgets, assist in setting rates, etc.(50%) Hire, train, supervise, and mentor ten or more UWCL student employees. Provide feedback on completed and on-going projects. Manage project flow. Assign projects, maintaining employee work schedules, and establishing deadlines.(10%) Promote the lab. Maintain visibility of the lab in creative and effective ways, e.g., provide guest lectures in graduate and undergraduate course, make presentations of UWCL work at conferences, workshops and community events, etc. Serve on relevant on-campus and professional committees.Refer this file for additional details.
