This position supports the overall mission of the Madison Police Department to identify, locate, and address public safety issues and crime trends in both a traditional and non-traditional tactics. Emphasis is placed on the use of a variety of analytical techniques and computer software to locate, extract, and distribute crime data in various formats to audiences. Work will be performed in a collaborative team environment consisting of sworn and non-sworn civilian employees. Collect, analyze, and disseminate crime and law enforcement data, maps, and other information relevant to actual or anticipated criminal activity throughout the Madison metropolitan area. Search the Record Management System (New World) using Crystal Reports to extract data that will be mapped using ArcView GIS and also analyzed using various software. This information will be used for analysis and to produce reports showing crime incidents and trends in graphical, tabular, and map formats. This candidate will perform a variety of tasks relating to the analysis of public safety problems and the initiatives to address them. Work may involve some team participation on specific projects, as assigned, and is performed under the general direction of a senior level manager. This position works closely with the supervisor of the Criminal Intelligence Section. This position will serve as the administrator for the Byrne Grant project. This work is performed under the general supervision of the Investigative Services Sergeant and involves considerable independent judgment and discretion with the ability to work within a team environment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Collect, collate, analyze, disseminate, and evaluate crime data to discover developing trends, patterns, and changes in criminal activity. Develop and support the use of GIS maps and geographic data to display criminal activity. Produce, map products, presentation graphics, and data extraction for use by Police Department and other City departments on an ongoing, and ad hoc, basis. Meet with various departments and law enforcement organizations to determine immediate and long-range crime mapping, geographic profiling and GIS needs. Orient potential users with diverse interests and objectives to new systems and technology. Propose solutions to identified problems. Prepare and administer all reports for the Byrne Grant. Provide training and assistance to Police personnel using crime mapping/GIS applications and geographic profiling software. Research and test new applications and systems. Develop support procedures and system documentation. Maintain a familiarity with activities and trends in the field of GIS/Mapping systems and recommend actions to improve techniques, facilities, services and procedures.
