The United States Environmental Protection Agency is seeking a Research Associates to work with the Superfund Division for the Groundwater Evaluation and Optimization System (GEOS) team. GEOS is a national leader in developing, implementing, and operating a variety of innovative computer systems for the long-term analysis of Superfund sites with contaminated groundwater. The GEOS team’s main function is to help evaluate the ongoing progress of Superfund groundwater cleanups.
Specific GEOS work will involve:
-help in the development/implementation of the Web interface to the GEOS groundwater database and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
-help to spatially, temporally and statistically analyze groundwater monitoring data
-help to evaluate the effectiveness of the cleanup, provide assistance to the Superfund Project Managers with Five-Year (cleanup status) Reviews
-help maintain GEOS groundwater monitoring database and migrate it to Oracle
GEOS uses software applications that are integrated to perform various environmental data analyses. GEOS has completed the development and implementation of these systems and is now seeking support to maintain and operate the systems. The support will consist of data file maintenance, operation of the software applications, discussions with EPA staff regarding available data and analysis needs on a site-by-site basis, report writing, and ensuring that the integrated system is operating properly. The major software applications include EquIS (MS Access/Oracle environmental database application), ARC GIS Server (Web based GIS Application), ArcGIS (GIS Application), Arc SDE (spatial database), PAM (environmental data statistical application), and EVS (environmental data visualization application).
The ideal candidate/s must have completed a BS/MS/PhD in physical science (such as hydrogeology), life science or in environmental engineering. They should have a working knowledge of GIS, Arc SDE or modeling environmental data. Advanced degrees are an asset. Programming skills in Java, .Net, and Visual Basic would be useful. The candidate must be able to work independently and be able to communicate effectively with EPA staff. The positions are one year and may be extended up to three years. You will be paid a monthly stipend through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Salaries range from 30K to 45K per year depending on education and experience. You are not a U.S. EPA employee but many of our interns have been subsequently hired through the Agency. Staring dates are as soon as possible.
