The Wisconsin State Cartographer’s Office (SCO), a unit administered by the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a qualified individual to develop and maintain geospatial technologies in support of SCO’s outreach mission. This includes investigation, testing, development, deployment, and ongoing maintenance of open source and commercial geographic information system (GIS) software in traditional and web-based applications.
The SCO, with a statutory mission of outreach, clearinghouse, and coordination, gathers, maintains and disseminates information about mapping and geospatial activities in the state. It accomplishes and coordinates these duties through various means, including print and web publications, presentations at conferences and workshops, and leadership and participation on statewide and local committees, taskforces, and consortia.
Degree and area of specialization:
– Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Cartography, Geographic Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or closely related field.
– A Bachelor’s Degree in another area of study combined with a graduate certificate in GIS, or combined with two years experience in mapping and/or GIS applications may be substituted for the above requirement.
The ideal candidate will have skills and experience in these areas:
– Understanding of cartographic and GIS principles.
– Experience with GIS analysis toolkit, including geospatial databases.
– Experience with scripting and/or programming for geospatial data.
– Technical understanding of common web concepts.
Other desirable qualifications include:
– Experience working for an organization with an outreach or educational mission.
– Organizational skills as demonstrated through past projects.
Principal duties:
60% Program Development:
A. Research, develop and implement new geospatial technologies to support SCO outreach and data/information dissemination missions.
B. Assist in the development and maintenance of SCO web pages and geospatial applications.
C. Coordinate with SCO staff to update content in catalogs, publications, and web-based materials.
D. Stay on top of important geospatial technology trends, with the goal of incorporating new approaches into SCO programs and disseminating new ideas to the geospatial community.
E. Participate in opportunities to obtain funding for SCO activities through grants and contracts.
F. Document internal policies and procedures.
G. Train students and staff to perform selected technical tasks.
30% Communication/Outreach:
A. Present at conferences and meetings to promote SCO initiatives.
B. Assist SCO staff in developing and implementing workshops and training materials.
C. Interface with other geospatial professionals in support of common objectives and initiatives.
D. Support SCO efforts to reach out to and support a broad spectrum of geospatial users with differing skill levels and interests and in different walks of life.
10% Other duties as assigned:
A. Write content for SCO publications and web site.
B. Assist with general office outreach functions at conferences and workshops.
C. Participate in departmental and campus committees.
D. Participate in state GIS associations and meetings.
E. Assist in long-term planning of SCO activities and initiatives.
