The Department of Natural Resources is dedicated to the preservation, protection, effective management, and maintenance of Wisconsin’s natural resources. We are currently seeking a Chronic Wasting Disease/Wildlife Health Information Specialist.

Job Duties
This is a senior level position that requires experience and expertise in multiple disciplines of information technology (IT) to support the data collection and reporting needs of the Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) program, as well as Wildlife Health Disease and Contaminants data collection and reporting, within the Bureau of Wildlife Management, Division of Lands in support of programs within the Bureaus of Wildlife Management, Integrated Science Services, and Law Enforcement.

The position will be responsible for developing and directing IT policy and plans for all aspects of the CWD program, and will design, implement, and maintain statewide CWD data and reporting systems. The position will train Department staff and direct their activities in the collection and entry of data. The position will also train Department staff in the use of the Wildlife Health Database for data entry, retrieval, mapping, and reporting and will run queries and provide disease data in response to requests from Department staff and external partners. The position will also coordinate with IT Specialists of key laboratories for electronic transfer of WI disease data.

The candidate will use a thorough knowledge of wildlife science, computer hardware and software, database management and information reporting to develop and integrate CWD IT systems to meet the information needs of interagency field staff, laboratory staff, disease testing laboratories, administrators, the Board, Legislators and the general public. This position will also use a thorough knowledge of wildlife disease terminology and concepts, computer hardware and software including mapping and reporting tools, and database management to plan and direct all aspects of database development, data systems integration, and data maintenance of the Wildlife Health Disease and Contaminants Database.

Special Notes:
This position will have office locations at the CWD Command Center(s), and the Central Office in Madison, WI and will report directly to the Wildlife Health Section Chief. The position must be able to travel to and work at remote field locations, as needed.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be able to develop and implement complex Oracle database systems; data modeling principles and procedures for complex databases; Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook); Adobe Illustrator; concepts, techniques and terminology of relational databases; current IT technologies and trends as they relate to relational databases and the integration of tabular and GIS data; project management principles and practices.

Knowledge/education in the wildlife management field including wildlife health. General knowledge of the diseases and contaminants of wildlife health including chronic wasting disease, avian influenza, West Nile virus, botulism, lead, and many others.
