The Townsend Lab in the UW-Madison Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology is seeking research support technicians to assist a vigorous environmental science/ecology research team. Up to three positions are available, including 1) data/database management; 2) remote sensing support; and 3) programming support. Position descriptions below are not mutually exclusive, so candidates with expertise across more than one description are encouraged to apply and indicate their experience in these areas.
Position Title, Appointment Type and Pay rate depend on qualifications and current status of applicant. Appointment types can include:
a) undergraduate or graduate students (hourly position)
b) research intern (within one year of completing Master’s degree)
c) limited-term employee (all other candidates, hourly position)
Hours are flexible, but appointment is expected to be 20-hr per week, with potential for more hours during summer. Applications received by June 1, 2012 will receive priority. Position is available immediately.

Data Support/Analysis Technician
This person will serve in a research environment supporting information systems to include database and GIS tasks to aid Townsend Lab technicians and post-doctorate associates conducting research. The Townsend lab uses field data, remote sensing and GIS to understand patterns of ecological processes in forests. The duties are varied and the individual works under limited supervision.
Goal: A 100% Project assistance for Townsend Lab
Activity: A1: 40% Assist with processing of data using spreadsheet, database, statistics or GIS software
Activity: A2: 30% Data entry, documentation, metadata associated with data used
Activity: A3: 20% Produce tables, graphs, and maps from data for publications
Activity: A4: 10% Organize and inventory forest ecology/environmental science field equipment.
Knowledge: 1 Experience with PC spreadsheet or database software
Knowledge: 2 Knowledge of GIS and/or remote sensing software
Knowledge: 3 Knowledge of database organization
Knowledge: 4 Experience with a statistical/data graphing software
Remote Sensing/GIS Technician
This position will serve in a research provide laboratory support for remote sensing image processing, GIS and spectroscopic data collection to aid researchers in the Townsend lab. The person will be responsible for manipulation of image data, as well as some data entry. The Townsend lab uses field data, remote sensing and GIS to understand patterns of ecological processes in forests. The duties are varied and the individual works under limited supervision.
Goal: A 100% Image/spectroscopy data processing and manipulation
Activity: A1: 50% Assist with processing of image and/or spectroscopy data using imaging processing or GIS software
Activity: A2: 25% Data entry associated with image data used
Activity: A3: 25% Produce maps from satellite images for publication
Knowledge: 1 Experience with remote sensing imagery
Knowledge: 2 Knowledge of image processing and/or GIS software, such as ArcMap or Erdas Imagine
Knowledge: 3 Experience with PC spreadsheet or statistics software
Programming Support Technician
This person will serve in a research environment by providing programming support to assist research in environmental sciences and ecology. Programming efforts are required for working with geospatial and image data. The Townsend lab uses field data, remote sensing and GIS to understand patterns of ecological processes. The duties are varied and the individual works under limited supervision.
Goal: A 100% Research programming
Activity: A1: 50% Write programs or scripts to accomplish specific scientific objectives
Activity: A2: 50% Write programs or scripts to automate routine processing needs for image data
Knowledge: 1 Experience with one or more of the following programming environments: R, Python, Matlab, IDL
Knowledge: 2 Knowledge of GIS and/or remote sensing data
