Responsibilities

The research assistant will contribute to ongoing research projects focused on neighborhood residential environments and health, with an emphasis on cancer health disparities.  Responsibilities will include characterization of neighborhood environments using GIS and remote sensing, data management and analysis, and writing. The research assistant will also interface with the Epidemiology Data Resource Center – MCW’s central source for secondary health and demographic data and GIS. The research assistant will gain experience with GIS and remote sensing applications in public health research and will become familiar with secondary health and demographic databases available for research purposes.

Qualifications

Must have a bachelor’s degree in geography, Geographic Information Systems, or related field. Expertise in remote sensing is required. Experience with ArcGIS and statistical software packages (STATA, R) is a big plus. Must be self-motivated, goal-oriented and a problem-solver. Must be able to work independently, with direction. Must be responsive and collaborative.

Schedule, Duration and Accommodation

The internship is 13 weeks long, from September 17 – December 14, with no hours expected during the week of November 26-30. Approximately 10-15 hours per week, between 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, are expected. Work hours are flexible but must be agreed upon in advance.
