The State Cartographer’s Office (SCO) is conducting a cooperative project to update Wisconsin’s existing statewide land cover database. The goal of the project is to map Wisconsin’s land cover with satellite data using a combination of ENVI, ArcGIS, and open source command line tools. Tasks will include organizing and analyzing existing GIS data sets, extracting new datasets using photo interpretation of high-resolution imagery, database management, and land cover map production.
Degree and area of specialization
Bachelor’s Degree in Remote Sensing, Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Database Management, Natural Resources, or closely-related field required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least one year of experience conducting remote sensing and GIS projects. Familiarity with common satellite and aerial imagery data formats, processing techniques, and classification methods. Preference will be given to individuals with GIS database creation, editing, and management experience as well as prior land cover classification work experience, and basic photointerpretation skills. Programming skills (Python preferred), and Linux experience are a plus but are not required. Other desired skills include basic statistical analysis.
