General Overview
The Townsend Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking two Ph.D. students interested in understanding spatial patterns of vegetation function in forested and agricultural landscapes. We make use of a range of remote sensing tools to measure plant traits, such as their chemistry and physiology, and to understand the drivers of how plant traits vary spatially and how this variability influences growth and productivity. In particular, we make extensive use of field measurements of leaf and canopy reflectance using spectrometers, and link such data to remote sensing imagery, especially hyperspectral data. The research has potential application in a range of areas, including forest ecology, forestry, agronomy and other areas in ecology and environmental science. Students interested in the interaction of genetics with plant physiology and ecosystem ecology are especially encouraged to apply, as we will be looking at how plant chemical and physiological traits differ with genetic differences.
Requirements
- A master’s degree in biology, ecology, geography or related environmental sciences (BS only with equivalent demonstrated experience),
- Experience in remote sensing, either through courses or work
- Solid working knowledge of statistics and/or a programming background
