Job Summary
Under the direction of GIS staff, utilizes geographic information systems (GIS) and cartographic skills and techniques to assist in the development and maintenance of the Forest Preserve’s GIS. Assists in the research, development, maintenance, and output of GIS databases. Assists in the training of District personnel who use the GIS databases or software. Assists in the research and application process for grants. Performs other duties as required. This is a year-round part-time position and will not exceed 29 hours per week.
Typical Duties
- Under the direction of the GIS staff, utilizes geographic information systems (GIS) and cartographic skills and techniques to assist in the development and maintenance of the District’s GIS.
- Assists in the preparation of high quality graphics and maps for District use.
- Assists in data creation, maintenance and metadata creation.
- Provides working maps and documents to engineers, landscape architects, planners and other professional staff and consultants.
- Collects GPS data as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours and pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher at an accredited college or university at time of application.
- Must have completed a minimum of 9 credit hours of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or Geospatial Analysis coursework OR possess certificates from ESRI that document the completion of a minimum of 32 hours of ESRI GIS training.
- Must bring three color map samples (8.5″ x 11″) prepared by the candidate, if selected for an interview.
- Must possess a current valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher in geography, computer science, geology, regional or urban planning, landscape architecture, a land-based science or a substantially similar area from an accredited college or university.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Other Characteristics
- Skill and proficiency with editing, plotting, and analysis using GIS (ESRI ArcMap version 10.X) software.
- Knowledge of related disciplines and processes, such as, image processing, global positioning systems (GPS), cartography, drafting, graphic arts, surveying, internet/intranet.
- Ability to work independently, to be resourceful, and to make sound judgments based on available information.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate and work well with others.
- Ability to work a minimum of 24 hours a week and up to 29 hours a week when needed.
