Overview:

This position supports geologists by providing geographic information system (GIS) services and geodatabase and GIS applications development and maintenance. The employee may provide interim GIS products to the geologists and use procedures and scripts to create GIS products from their work.

Essential Functions:

Geographic Information Systems

  • Design, manage, and/or update ArcGIS geodatabases for use within geology projects
  • Assist geologists with software-related problems
  • Develop and maintain Python scripts and ArcGIS models for more efficient generation of standardized GIS products
  • Participate in development of new products and procedures; stay current with developments in GIS software and technology
  • Facilitate access to, and distribution of, MGS GIS data to external consumers through development of ArcGIS web services

Database Management

  • Manage, maintain and enhance enterprise geologic geodatabases including the County Well Index, Quaternary Data Index, Karst Features Database, Hand Samples, Outcrop and others
  • Develop database and GIS software tools (applications and scripts) for geologists to use in accessing and maintaining enterprise databases

Qualifications:

Required:

  • One of more years of relevant post high school computer/technical education in geographic information systems, specifically ERSI family of ArcGIS products
  • Training and experience in enterprise GIS database management and development with skills in the following systems: SQL, PostgreSQL, VB.NET or Python

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in geology or related field
  • Strong interest in geogoly and geologic mapping
  • Experience using Access and/or Oracle
  • Comfortable working in a team environment, working on several projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills
