CItizen-based Monitoring Coordinator

The Department of Natural Resources is dedicated to the preservation, protection, effective management and maintenance of Wisconsin’s natural resources. The Bureau of Natural Heritage Conservation is seeking to fill a Citizen-based Monitoring Coordinator located in our Central Office, Madison. In partnership with individuals and organizations, the DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air, and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor activities. 

Job Duties:   

Under general supervision of the Bureau Director, this position provides leadership, coordination and expertise in the development and implementation of the department’s Citizen-based Monitoring Program. The position serves as the department’s liaison to the Wisconsin Citizen-based Monitoring Network and Citizen-based Monitoring Advisory Council, and analyzes the impact of department policies and practices on volunteer monitoring organizations and activities. Work involves developing statewide policy and procedures needed to implement the goals of the program; providing training and technical guidance to department staff and others engaged in aquatic and terrestrial species and habitat monitoring; and establishing and administering a formal process for analysis and utilization of citizen collected monitoring data by the department for natural resource decision-making and management.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

• Knowledge of the field of conservation biology, zoology, botany and ecology

• Knowledge of monitoring and data collection techniques and equipment in a lab and/or field setting. 

• Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the field of citizen science. 

• Knowledge of ecosystem management, and natural resources planning, including landscape-scale approaches for natural community, critical habitat, and species conservation.

• Plants, animals, and natural communities of Wisconsin or the Great Lakes Region, including their natural history, ecological relationships, habitat requirements, threats, and conservation needs.

• Skills working with coalitions and conservation groups.

• Computer skills including word processing, design and use of spreadsheets and databases, representation and analysis of spatial data using GIS and other systems, and development of web-based interfaces.
