This opportunity provides practical, hands-on experience during the 2016 summer and fall semesters for a student currently pursuing or a recent graduate in GIS, Geography, or a related discipline with a strong focus in GIS (e.g. Environmental Science, Planning, or Engineering). This is a part-time paid internship requiring 15 hours per week. Hours are very flexible but must be worked during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 AM-5 PM).
Under the supervision of the Monona Public Works Project Coordinator/GIS Specialist, the student selected for this program will perform various office and some field duties while having the opportunity to observe first-hand the operation and organization of numerous departments within the City of Monona. Assignments may include:
- As-Built file maintenance of digital and paper copies and file archiving
- Communication with City staff, engineering consultants, and architectural consultants
- Aggregation of Final Construction As-Builts and As-Built review
- Organization of property information for stormwater maintenance agreements
- Field work using GPS and data collection techniques
- GIS data management, database design, form building, and general mapping techniques using Adobe Pro, Arc for Desktop, and ArcGIS Online
- GIS data editing and digitization techniques from gathered field data and As-Builts
- Integrating GIS workflows with field collection using GPS?
Qualifications
- General understanding of how to read blueprints and design schematics, especially concerning utility information and specifications
- Ability to organize information quickly and the ability to multitask
- Ability to create, manage, and analyze spatial data using ESRI Softwares, including but not limited to, ArcMap, ArcPro, ArcCatalog, ArcGIS Online, ESRI Collector, ESRI Explorer
- Experience using Adobe Acrobat Reader, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft One Note, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Powerpoint
- Experience using GPS devices with Bluetooth capabilities and GIS integrated workflows
- Experience with Imagery file formats (JPEG, .TIFF, .PNG, and .SID) and imagery corrections and editing softwares
- Knowledge of geographic coordinate systems, coordinate system transformations, and general principles of cartography
Qualified candidate must be a student currently pursuing or a recent graduate in GIS, Geography, or a related discipline with a strong focus in GIS (e.g. Environmental Science, Planning, or Engineering).
Qualified candidate must possess a valid driver’s license.
