STUDENT HOURLY ILLUSTRATION ASSISTANT
Position available with the History of Cartography Project
Hours: 10 hours per week. Weekdays during standard office hours, but flexible around your class schedule. Preferred start date 1 June 2016. Starting wage is $10.50/hour.
Primary Duties:
• Assist the current illustrations editor, who orders and processes digital images for publication
• Enter information to an existing database, including figures and text in English and foreign languages
• Locate reference images and find information on maps and images using UW and other libraries and online catalogs, including resources worldwide
• Communicate with institutions worldwide (in writing and by phone)
• Provide illustrations editor with information or forms needed to order images; place orders as directed
Requirements:
• Student status; prefer at least two years remaining in school
• Training in or experience using database software (Filemaker strongly preferred), Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, web browsers, and file sharing tools (UW Box or commercial)
• Understanding of various image file formats (TIF, JPG, JP2)
• Ability to work independently, attention to detail, ability to multitask, and professional writing and communication skills
Helpful skills and experience:
• Familiarity with web-based academic research tools
• Ability to edit digital image files using Adobe Photoshop (e.g., cropping)
• Familiarity with foreign languages
• Background in history, geography, cartography, or library and information science
