Job Summary

This position will assist Resource Assessment professional staff in completing GIS, Remote Sensing and Forestry inventory tasks for customer projects.  Responsibilities include stream analysis processing, mosaic imagery, change detection processes, apply specific GIS tools to run on DEMs and DSMs, spatial analyst, Python scripts and other GIS, remote sensing and forestry inventory tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

Work hours are subject to change based on work needs; hours of work and days off may vary and includes weekends, evenings and holidays.

  • Associates degree in Geography, GIS, or Natural Resource Management
  • Knowledge of cartography sufficient to understand topographical, political, survey and other maps and/or to produce maps for timber sales and forest development.
  • Knowledge of GIS along with a basic understanding of remote sensing.
  • Ability to interpret aerial photography sufficient to accurately use photos for mapping, species identification and locating corners and property lines
  • Ability to conduct basic forest inventory procedures.
  • Ability to learn and use various GIS software.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and use other DNR office software quickly and efficiently.
  • Ability to understand oral directions sufficient to carry out verbal assignments in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Communication skills sufficient to ensure accurate and effective transmission of information.
  • Ability to ride in a fixed-wing airplane for up to eight hours without adverse effects (air sickness)
  • Requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver’s license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year technical-level experience in GIS techniques and applications used in Natural Resource Management..
  • General knowledge of Division of Forestry policies and procedures sufficient to implement assigned tasks safely and within legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Knowledge of forest inventory sufficient to obtain and record detailed and accurate field data.
  • Ability to identify native and invasive trees, shrubs and plants of Minnesota
