Job Description

Under general supervision in the Land Conservation Division of the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department, this position is responsible for developing, monitoring, tracking and reporting conservation practice data related to best management practice implementation and nutrient management planning activities including implementation and monitoring; reviewing and updating conservation plans; database management including geolocating fields, tolerable soil loss, rotations, tillage and nutrients. This position also provides assistance in creating and developing reports, maps, and other analysis related to conservation practice data.

Job Duties

  • Manage data and databases for monitoring and tracking information related to best management practice implementation and nutrient management planning activities.
  • Develop reports and maps as well as conduct modeling analysis related to best management practice implementation and nutrient management planning activities.
  • Prepare and present various educational materials and programs regarding conservation activities.

Education & Experience

  • Combination of training and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in soils, agronomy, engineering, natural resources conservation geographic information systems (GIS), or related field.
  • Desired, but not required, at least one year of experience in the professional application of GIS and conservation related computer models and databases.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of computer and GIS software applications
  • Knowledge of database management systems
  • Knowledge of soil and water conservation practices
  • Knowledge of farm operations
  • Knowledge of nutrient management planning
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals, public and private agencies
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to utilize SNAP Plus, SNAP Maps, RUSLE2, SWAT, EVAAL and other modeling tools

Special Requirements

Position is expected to work in the office as well as in a variety of outdoor conditions common to Dane County. Must be able to traverse a wide variety of field conditions and carry equipment common for the position. Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Wisconsin driver’s license with a good driving record and access to personal transportation.
