Support and assist with transportation planning as an Urban and Regional Planner, Environmental Analyst, or Real Estate Specialist Intern with the Department of Transportation! These internships are applicable to a wide variety of majors and interests and provide valuable experience to students while contributing to current projects and programs. 

Position Summary:   

Support and assist statewide or regional transportation planning teams with critical projects! Past internship positions have assisted with the data collection and analysis for the statewide freight plan, assisted with development of traffic forecasts, assisted with the development of environmental tracking systems, various environmental and storm water tasks, wetland mitigation and assisted with real estate acquisition, appraisal and relocation. 

Each internship position focuses on a single project or focus area. There internship positions support program goals and work with professionals on projects. 

Focus Areas:

  • GIS Program Intern (Madison) – This position will work with a GIS Program Manager to learn and follow a set procedure that converts airport CAD data to a GIS statewide airport geodatabase. 
  • Urban and Regional Planning Intern (2 Positions in Madison) – These positions will work in either long range transportation planning and tasks related to transit and job access planning, or work with traffic forecasting and economic development planning. 
  • Highway Maintenance Intern (Madison) – This position will assist with Roadside Corridor management including inventory process, document process, outlines, data collection, GIS. 
  • Environmental Intern (Madison) – This position will assist with Karner blue butterfly mapping, developing a GIS base map to facilitate corridor planning for pollinators, consolidate existing wetland GIS info, and will assist with identifying/mapping native plantings. 
  • Real Estate Specialists (2 Positions in Madison) – These positions will assist with appraisal and relocation for transportation projects. 
  • Environmental Intern (Eau Claire and Superior) – This position will work with wetland mitigation and aid in environmental office duties.

Internship Eligibility Requirements:

    1. Interns must be enrolled in classes for Fall Semester 2017 (i.e. sophomore, junior, senior, 2nd year technical college program, or graduate students).
    2. Interns must carry a minimum of 6 credits during Spring Semester 2017. Certain programs require students to be enrolled full-time.
    3. Students who have already graduated or will be graduating from a college/ university program in May 2017 and are not enrolling in a graduate program for Fall 2017 are ineligible for internship programs.

Required Documents:

  • COVER LETTER: Your cover letter should include: the functional area you are interested in, information regarding coursework you have taken/ plan to take relative to your major/ functional area and what you hope to gain from an internship opportunity at WisDOT.
  • TRANSCRIPTS: Unofficial transcripts are fine. Transcripts must include all courses completed so far and courses in progress for spring 2017. If your current transcript does not include the courses you have enrolled in for spring 2017, you may provide other official university documentation such as a course schedule. Word documents will not be accepted. These documents are used to determine your eligibility and number of credits
  • REFERENCES: Include contact information for three professional references (no reference letters).
