Job Description:

The American Geographical Society Library seeks a student intern to assist with GIS and spatial data services. The incumbent will join a collaborative team of student interns and a full-time Geospatial Information Specialist. Those with strengths in Web GIS are strongly encouraged to apply.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Fulfilling digital data, image, and printing requests and performing reference interviews with students, researchers, and public patrons
  • Developing learning materials related to discovering, processing, mapping, and analyzing spatial data and the AGSL collections
  • Performing high-quality scans and image processing of historic paper maps
  • Performing general library tasks

Required Qualifications:

  • Enrolled as a student
  • An interest in geography and geospatial technology
  • Ability to perform routine desktop GIS tasks
  • Ability to perform routine tasks on a Windows PC, Microsoft Office, Office365
  • Ability to complete detailed work with a high degree of consistency and accuracy
  • Respectfully and effectively work with our diverse community of patrons and staff
  • Ability to solve problems independently as well as collaboratively
  • Ability and interest in learning to use unfamiliar tools, software, and equipment
  • Position subject to UWM Libraries criminal background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate student or advanced undergraduate studying GIS (in any discipline), geography, or library/information science
  • Advanced knowledge of ArcGIS software
  • Experience with web development
  • Experience in developing interactive web-based mapping applications
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop
  • Experience searching for and using geospatial data
  • Experience with programming/development; knowledge of programing/scripting languages
  • Proficiency in language(s) other than English

Additional Information:

10-20 hours per week during the Spring and Fall semesters, and 20-40 hours per week during the summer of 2017. Student assistants work a fixed schedule each week. That schedule is flexible, but must be contained within the AGSL’s open hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. The ideal candidate will be available for the remainder of the spring 2017 semester.
