Job Summary:

This vacancy is for a Geographer Coordinator position located in one of the U.S. Census Bureau Regional Offices (RO). This is a Term Appointment, initial appointment is not to exceed (NTE) 2 years. This appointment may be extended 2 additional years at management’s discretion. A supervisory probationary period may be required. Relocation expenses will be paid. The work schedule for this position is Mixed Tour. With a Mixed Tour work schedule, an employee may be changed between full-time, part-time and intermittent work schedules to accommodate fluctuating workloads and is subject to a signed agreement.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The individual selected for this position will:

  • Review proposals, plans, and specifications for geographical operations, make recommendations and offer suggestions about general data collection specifications in regards to the geography of the area to be considered.
  • Engage in analytic and comparative studies with the aim to evaluate definitions of geographic areas for the Decennial Census.
  • Manage a technical and non-technical staff to plan, develop, and implement the regional geographic program.
  • Communicate statistical methodology and techniques of data collection and sampling.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. OR
  • Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the Basic Entry Requirements above, applicants must have the specialized experience listed below:

Specialized Experience:

For GG-13, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes reviewing proposals and geographic data collection specifications; evaluating and analyzing studies of geographical areas; managing, leading, and supervising geographical teams at multiple levels; and communicating to the public to address questions, concerns, and providing assistance in the use of online products. Education cannot be substituted for experience at this grade level.
