Duties & Responsibilities:
As a Geographer within the Wisconsin Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
- Serves as a mentor to junior application developers.
- Develops, deploys and maintains web-based mapping applications and web services.
- Provisions and maintains GIS oriented web-services software infrastructure. Works with SPOC and IT staff to ensure security measures are in place and maintained on GIS systems and software.
- Designs, codes, tests, and debugs large and complex programs; e.g., mission critical or with enterprise-wide impact that includes the maintenance of source code and modification and upgrading of code.
- Coordinates efforts to enhance GIS oriented web-services software reliability through leadership of discussions of enhanced application design methodologies.
- Coordinates and advises project chiefs in selecting or migrating relational databases. Works with staff to train and implement proper database design and management.
- Meets with cooperators and management regularly to show progress, resolve issues, and suggest new directions and technologies where appropriate.
- Leads meetings, conferences and provide training for specific topics to gain buy-in or provide guidance for the intended product outcome.
- Stays abreast of emerging GIS technologies and advises project chiefs and management of new opportunities for improvement and advancement of programs.
- Designs and performs website content and maintenance of WiM and DOI Geospatial Platform websites using HTML and Drupal platforms.
Qualifications:
One year of specialized experience or equivalent to the next lower level (GS-11). Specialized experience is described as: Experience understanding the complete application development process; including application and database design, deployment, and administration for geospatial software products and services; experience designing and developing scientific lab information systems; experience in a leadership role working in a team environment, or working independently; experience solving problems and troubleshooting issues where little or no documented guidance exists; experience with relational database management systems (RDBMS) like Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.; experience creating and managing geospatial web-based products; experience in cloud deployment of geospatial applications and services; and experience working in cloud or data center environment performing basic IT functions to maintain proper DOI secured infrastructure.

Other Requirements:
- Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
- A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant’s successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
- You will be required to operate a government-owned or leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties.
