Job Summary:

East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission is looking for an energetic and dynamic professional to implement Safe Routes to School programming. The Safe Routes to School Planner will provide technical assistance and support to local communities looking to start and/or implement a local Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, and produce resource guides and materials that support SRTS implementation across the region. Other planning experience (housing, land use, economic development, public health, GIS, etc.) is considered a plus as this position will occasionally work on other planning projects or programs under the supervision and direction of various Commission staff.

Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities for the Safe Routes to School – Planner include:

  • Actively work with local schools to develop partners, collect evaluation data, develop recommendations, produce and implement an action plan, and apply for SRTS funding.
  • Manage and facilitate local SRTS coalition/take forces in assisting them to implement their SRTS activities.
  • Serve as an expert resource on SRTS implementation, including:
    • Coordinate with schools and communities on events such as but not limited to International Walk to School Day and Walking School Bus Programs.
    • Developing and giving presentations on SRTS implementation topics at meetings and relevant conferences.
    • Providing technical assistance via email, telephone, and in person to local communities seeking help on issues with wide-ranging consequences, such as overturning ƒ??no bicycling to schoolƒ?? policies, and responding to questions from the field on starting a SRTS program and implementation of recommendations.
  • Create and manage committees for youth to share their thoughts on SRTS implementation, communication, and how to best engage youth leadership.
  • Work with partner organizations to promote events and programs as necessary.
  • Work on other transportation and related projects as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelorƒ??s degree in planning, geography, health and wellness/public health or a related field required.
  • Experience with Safe Routes to School programs a plus.
  • Experience and skill in public speaking and presentations.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with multiple stakeholders to facilitate partnerships.
  • Strong background in writing and developing technical assistance materials.
  • Self-motivated, creative, detail-oriented and energetic.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Enjoys working with children.
  • Advanced level of proficiency and previous experience in a variety of computer software applications, especially web browsers, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with ArcMap and GIS applications and Adobe InDesign a plus.
