Job Description:
NORC is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist with a survey or programming background to contribute to social science-based survey work and related research projects. This position resides in the Statistics and Methodology Department.
Responsibilities:
Providing technical advice on statistical and methodological issues to Project Directors and Task Leaders; authoring sections of technical reports, methodology reports, and other documentary deliverables; designing experiments and other statistical/methodological research for pretest data collection efforts; analyzing data collected during pretests or methodological components of ongoing studies; conducting substantive analysis under direction of Principal Investigator or other substantive analysts; performing confidentiality analyses in accordance with client standards; consulting on questionnaire design: frequently organizing and conducting cognitive interviews to inform design decisions; being responsible for day-to-day activities on a task or project component, including supervising staff in design and implementation/production activities, projecting resource needs, monitoring task budget and schedule, resolving technical and management problems, monitoring the achieved sample, preparing or reviewing deliverables, and communicating with the client and subcontractor(s); serving as an internal consultant on survey design issues, as requested by the project director or task leader; authoring various sections of the technical proposal, present research papers at professional conferences, and submit articles for publication in journals.
Qualifications:
Required
- Master’s degree in Geography, Sociology, Urban Studies, Statistics, or a related social or environmental science-based field, OR Bachelor’s degree and experience performing geospatial data processing and analysis
- At least 3 years experience related to statistics and/or survey methodologies
- Experience with MapInfo Professional or ArcGIS including data manipulation, geospatial data processing, and mapping
- Experience with statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, or R
- Knowledge and experience with demographic, census, and vital statistics data
- Knowledge of coordinate system and projections concepts
- Experience in survey methodology, including sample design, weighting, and related analyses
- Broad skills in geospatial data manipulation, processing, analysis, and mapping
- Skills in key geospatial techniques including data geocoding (and address matching), geospatial data manipulations, projections, and basic geospatial analyses
- Experience in mapping and cartography to ensure geospatial results are portrayed accurately.
- Basic skills or experience manipulating data in MS Access, Excel spreadsheets and other data tools
- Must be detail and quality-oriented, with demonstrated written and oral communication skills
Prefrerred
- Experience in survey methodology, including sample design, weighting, and related analyses
- The ability to automate complex geospatial processing steps using MapBasic, or Python
- Experience with interactive data visualization and mapping libraries such as R-Shiny and JavaScript Leaflet and D3
- Experience programming in an object-oriented language such as Java or C++
- Skills in importing and integrating data from a variety of non-spatial data formats (spreadsheets, lists, text files, and databases) into GIS format
- Experience with national geospatial data such as TIGER, SF3, NLCD, and NHD
- Knowledge of RDBMS concepts and basic skills with Structured Query Language (SQL)
