Job Summary:
This position serves as a Forestry GIS Cartographic Specialist in the Bureau of Forestry Business Services, serving 500+ Division of Forestry (FR) employees. Under general review, the GIS Cartographic Specialist works under the guidance of the Geographic Systems Team Leader to coordinate ArcGIS Online (AGOL) initiatives and establish cartographic standards for FR operations and services programs. The GIS Cartographic Specialist will develop and implement standards and guidelines of AGOL use for FR, as well as design web based and/or mobile mapping applications to satisfy program needs. The position requires comprehensive knowledge of GIS and cartographic principles. The position will work independently on complex assignments including developing cartographic components of custom applications.
Duties:
45% Perform cloud-based and mobile mapping tasks.
- Research, support and oversee ESRI’s AGOL technology options to satisfy program needs.
- Coordinate the design and management of online/mobile web mapping applications and other AGOL products.
- Support FR staff utilizing AGOL tools and manage its administration within FR.
- Coordinate data migration into publicly available services.
30% Using ESRI software, create cartographic products for FR programs.
- Create visually appealing maps following cartographic principles for use by staff, partners, and the public via publications, presentations, and the internet.
- Develop and maintain geospatial data, documentation, and metadata following established standards.
- Provide recommendations on the cartographic and design attributes of custom desktop and mobile applications.
25% Participate on teams of IT/GIS professionals.
- Draft and manage standards, guidelines, and manuals for AGOL.
- Develop and implement map template creation and cartographic standards.
- Research and draft custom application map design.
- Participate in all phases of application testing for FR custom applications or commercial solutions.
Qualifications:
Required
- College-level training or professional experience in cartography, design or related field.
- Experience using ESRI’s AGOL platform and tools such as Survey123 and ArcCollector.
- Working knowledge of ESRI’s desktop ArcGIS technologies (10.x).
- Knowledge of designing maps/applications for mobile environments.
- Ability to work independently and in a team of IT and/or GIS professionals and perform detailed tasks with a high level of accuracy, tracking progress and documenting results.
Preferred
- Experience in programming (python or javascript) and/or custom widget design.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and facilitate decision making in a team environment.
- Knowledge of customer service concepts and strategies with creative problem solving skills.
