Job Summary:

An employee in this class applies GIS technology and programming tools to design and support geographical information systems and applications. Duties include consulting with GIS users to determine needs; developing and supporting customized applications, data, web services, and documents to meet user specifications; and participating in the assessment, implementation, and maintenance of GIS technology and techniques. The work is performed independently within the limits of general operating policies, procedures, and program objectives, and under the general direction of assigned staff.

Qualifications:

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), geography, computer science, information technology, or related field of study (all degrees must include course work in GIS) AND two years of direct GIS experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Duties:

  • Develops, enhances, maintains, analyzes, supports, and troubleshoots GIS databases, applications, and web services using various GIS programming tools.
  • Advises, trains, and supports GIS users in the use of GIS programs, products, geospatial data, applications, and web services.
  • Creates, modifies, edits and updates computerized and manual departmental maps, files, data, and records.
  • Creates and administers geoprocessing and scripting models to perform spatial analysis and modeling.
  • Communicates and facilitates data sharing agreements and distribution with outside agencies.
  • Uses GIS technology to implement GIS updates, analysis and retrieval procedures.
  • Assists with the development of GIS standards and procedures.
  • Prepares technical documentation and specifications and assists users in the development of procedure manuals.
  • Defines and develops user controls, security, and procedures to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
  • Participates in the evaluation and implementation of GIS software, hardware and network products.
  • Attends County, local and regional GIS committee meetings.
  • Coordinates with other GIS staff to plan projects and share technical expertise.
  • Demonstrates punctual and reliable attendance in accordance with designated work schedule.
  • Performs all assigned tasks in accordance with established rules, regulations and practices, and promptly reports work related injuries, unsafe work conditions and near miss accidents to the supervisor.
  •  Performs related duties as assigned.
