Job Summary:

Ramsey County Public Works – County Surveyor – Land Survey Division has two (2) openings for the position Engineering / Surveying Technician 1. This is an entry level technical position with a career path to Engineering / Surveying Technician 2.  This position will assist the Surveyor’s Office staff on a field survey crew, perform CAD computations and drafting, assist in records research and customer service.

Assists with engineering and land surveying assignments in the office and in the field including construction inspection, traffic engineering, land surveying, project design and project management; and to perform related duties as assigned.  (This is the entry-level classification in the Engineering/Surveying Technician series.  The duties performed in this classification enable employees that meet experience requirements to advance to Engineering/Surveying Technician 2 through demonstration of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.)

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in setting up work zone traffic control systems for various engineering and land surveying projects to ensure the safety of personnel, the public and equipment.
  • Assist in testing, maintaining and cleaning survey equipment. Inventories and loads work truck with supplies, materials and equipment necessary to perform survey field work.
  • Index, file and maintains various construction and land survey records.
  • Assist in land survey and engineering survey fieldwork.
  • Using AutoCAD Civil 3D, assists in design, drafting and mapping which includes: completing vertical and horizontal alignments of roads with allowances for driveways and other features, setting curb elevation, and adjusting storm sewer location to avoid conflicts with utilities; develop pre-design layouts; prepare Certificates of Survey, Highway Right of Way Plats, description exhibits, and illustrative graphics.
  • Assist in engineering and land surveying computations and analysis.
  • Assist with inspection of construction projects to ensure compliance with state and project specifications.  Assist in testing aggregate, bituminous and concrete materials for quality control.
  • Assist in researching engineering, land surveying and property records.
  • Assist in examining proposed subdivision plats, Common Interest Community plats and Registered Land Surveys for mathematical accuracy and general compliance with state statutes, professional standards, county ordinances and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduation or equivalent and completion of a two-year vocational/technical program in drafting and engineering/survey technology, or comparable specialized training on or before June 30, 2018 with no exceptions.
