Job Summary:

The Construction Division of the Transportation Department is seeking multiple full-time, benefit-earning Assistant Engineering Technicians to work on the construction inspection crew with rotations to a survey crew and/or materials testing lab. The work schedule will be Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. including occasional nights, weekends, and holidays with overtime. Locations for reporting to these positions will vary within Hennepin County.

Duties:

  • Assist in construction inspection, material testing, and construction survey activities.
  • Perform or check basic quantity, alignment, mathematical, or geometric calculations for construction projects.
  • Assist in both construction staking and survey computations.
  • Observe construction activities for compliance to the project plans and specifications.
  • Perform quality control tests on construction materials.
  • Read and interpret construction plans and technical specifications.
  • Use computers for completing calculations and plan revisions.
  • Work cooperatively with other county employees at various job levels; effectively communicate with contractors, residents, and city employees.
  • Perform material testing in a lab setting, on a variety of construction material.
  • Perform bituminous and concrete plant inspections; organize reports for bituminous and concrete plant inspections.

Qualifications:

  • One of the following:
    • Completion of an approved land surveying or highway/civil engineering technology training program.
    • One or more years of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, or related engineering work.
    • One or more years of experience analyzing numerical data using computer software applications, or developing and maintaining computerized information systems/applications.
    • Thirty (30) or more college semester credits in mathematics, geology, computer science, or engineering-related technical course work.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver’s permit.
  • Knowledge of math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry; knowledge of construction equipment, materials, and methods.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with lab testing equipment.
  • Experience:
    • Operating survey equipment such as total station, levels, and tripods.
    • Operating inspection and materials testing equipment such as air tester, proctors, and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP).
    • Using computer software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, AutoCAD, and Microstation.
  • Ability to:
    • Communicate with staff at all levels of the organization, using all types of communication methods.
    • Maintain neat and accurate records.
    • Lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, around heavy construction equipment, and around traffic in all weather conditions.
    • Work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
