Job Summary:

 

Responsible to perform Geographic Information Systems (GIS), database, graphics, and related data management work in support of Planning Division functions, including mapping, research, data management, community engagement, master planning, project design, and permitting that is consistent with MPRB mission, values, goals, and comprehensive plan.  This work is accomplished to ensure the needs and interests of diverse communities are met while exhibiting cultural proficiency in meeting the needs and interest of underserved and under-represented communities.

Duties:

  • Responsible to produce quality in-house and public-facing maps using GIS software, graphics software, and/or other computer-based drawing software.
  • Effectively manage a variety of department-specific and organization-wide data, using GIS databases and other technological methods.
  • Assist Senior Planners, Park Planners, and Design Project Managers with graphic communications, mapping, data collection and dissemination, and other support duties.
  • Assist in the collection and compilation of data and other information to aide in planning and design activities for park facilities, programs, services, etc.
  • Responsible to conduct background research for responses to requests for information from the public, consultants, coworkers and decision-makers about planning projects, planning principles and processes, planning policies, and project implementation options.
  • Accurately follow GIS database standards for content, format, design, and maintenance procedures, and maintain quality control of data sets.
  • Coordinate with other Divisions in GIS-related matters, specifically the Asset Management System and GIS coordination with ITS.
  • Work collaboratively and be actively engaged in development of systems to improve and streamline work processes that are integrated and coordinated across the division and utilize best practices for design and project management activities.
  • Effectively promote interest in park and recreation activities to underserved and under-represented communities through joint initiatives with community groups and partnering organizations, social media, resource fairs and through presentations before community groups, students and other organizations.
  • Keep the Director of Strategic Planning promptly informed of matters as they relate to the unit, department, division and MPRB.
  • Assist MPRB staff in achieving measurable outcomes that are in alignment with underserved and under-represented community driven concerns and quality of life issues.
  • Foster and demonstrate effective relationship building in a collaborative environment including working across department and division lines and forming partnerships for better access and services; eliminate barriers to achieving results; take full advantage of available resources.
  • Assist in daily office tasks such as filing, recording, maintaining records, reproduction, communications, and other similar duties.

Other Duties:

  • Assist with construction permitting, encroachment permitting, and other construction-related activities as necessary.
  • Communicate with the community about various Division initiatives and projects, as directed by supervisor.
  • Ensure that the Americans with Disabilities Act regulations are met or exceeded in the performance of applicable job duties.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  • Establish and maintain effective, respectful, and productive working relationships with a diverse customer base and in a diverse work environment.
  • Respond effectively and in a timely manner to administrative requests.
  • Serve actively on MPRB committees to ensure that safety, maintenance, planning and recreation services complement and support each other in addressing community interests, issues and needs, and are in alignment with the mission, vision, values, goals and objectives of the MPRB.
  • Work proactively to resolve problems and conflicts that surface.
  • Perform related duties as apparent or assigned.

Qualifications:

Training and Experience (position requirements at entry)

  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited college in drafting, GIS applications, design, or related field.
  • GIS applications work experience: at least 1 year.

Or

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college in geography, parks and recreation, urban studies, or related field preferred, if course of study and/or experience includes GIS and/or AutoCAD experience.
  • GIS applications work experience: at least 2 years.

  • Software applications used in design and planning profession including ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and Adobe Suite.
  • Industry best practices in data collection, management, and communication methodology.
