Job Summary & Duties:

The Manager, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) supervises the day-to-day operations of analysts, developers, and technicians who produce geographical data by using their knowledge of specialized computer systems.  The GIS manager’s duties and responsibilities include coordinating and managing the system hardware and software, developing GIS applications, making presentations, and conducting training sessions for the staff.  The GIS manager will also be responsible for recruiting and training new staff members.

Additionally, the GIS manager will be responsible for improving services by identifying opportunities for new procedures and resource needs of the staff. The GIS manager will oversee and evaluate data entry, data analysis, language programming, and system maintenance and operations. Strong organizational and prioritization skills are a must.

Preferred Knowledge:

  • Leveraging knowledge of GIS platforms, data management, and IT networks and how they serve businesses at the enterprise level.
  • Making sure that projects keep to pre-determined deadlines
  • Investigating new GIS applications and staying apprised of new technologies
  • Studying, designing, developing and implementing the GIS systems, database and programs.
  • Training or arranging training for system users; specifying and maintaining system access and security.
  • Working closely with end users to ensure data is converted correctly and programs work as planned; providing technical support and guidance to users in the operation of the system.
  • Applying GIS analysis, GIS mapping, and GIS technical skills and knowledge in new innovative ways.

Required Skills:

Demonstrates extensive abilities and/or a proven record of success managing the identification and addressing of client needs including the following areas:

  • Implementing or administrating ESRI ArcGIS Server & SDE 10.x
  • Leveraging an understanding of relational databases and geodatabases (SQL Server and Oracle)
  • Directing collection, storage, analysis, and interpretation of geospatial data.
  • Writing and maintaining internal manuals, training materials, and systems.
  • Delivering reports on geographic data, ensuring standardization, and quality control of data across reports.
  • Developing and maintaining software applications and databases for digital mapping and spatial data.
  • Troubleshooting and solving hardware and software problems; preparing and maintaining software documentation and purchasing new equipment to improve project efficiency
  • Scheduling hardware preventative maintenance, operating system upgrades and on-site repair of hardware problems.
  • Communicating with the client in an organized and knowledgeable manner while demonstrating flexibility in prioritizing and completing tasks
  • Contributing to a positive working environment by building solid relationships with team members and proactively seeking guidance, clarification, and feedback, to less-experienced staff
  • Knowledge of GIS mapping software products including ESRI ArcGIS 10.x and extensions, ArcGIS Online, and Autodesk AutoCAD. A successful candidate should be familiar with the data requirements and discrepancies of each system.
  • Designing, implementing, and supporting business processes around a GIS platform that serves day to day needs of end users

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience in a GIS-related role
  • A Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in GIS, Geography, Earth Science, Engineering, Computer Science or a related field from an accredited college or university
  • A GISP Certificate is desirable but not required
