Job Summary:

The City of Naperville’s Transportation, Engineering & Development Business Group TED seeks a GIS Intern for full-time summer employment for the 2018 season. Duties include both office and field work (in all weather conditions). Work hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Term of employment is from approximately May through August.

Duties:

The GIS Intern will assist in the maintenance of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) databases: the Transportation Data Model, the Naperville Land Information System, and Traffic Data.  The Intern also produces a wide range of maps & displays for engineering and planning staff.  The data is not only internally crucial for asset management, but necessary for residents and businesses to open, occupy, and receive City services.  For example: accurate and up-to-date sidewalk information is necessary to analyze sidewalk gaps and develop the installation program; pavement data is necessary to program the Maintenance Improvement Plan; building/subdivision information is necessary for emergency services response; and traffic data is necessary for signal warrant analysis and optimization.

Qualifications:

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a college-accredited curriculum in Engineering, Asset Management, Geography, Information Systems, or a related field.  Training is provided but candidates should possess strong PC and software skills,  oral and written communication skills; and experience with ArcMap and GIS applications.  Must bring energy and be self-motivated. This is an excellent opportunity to learn and work for a very progressive organization.

All candidates must be at least 18 years of age to apply for a position with the City.  Children and grandchildren of city employees and elected officials are not eligible for hire. A valid State of Illinois Class D Driver’s License is required.  Applicants should possess a driving history with no moving violations for at least the last twelve (12) months.  Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen.
